EG Wastewater Treatment Plant Fun Facts
- The EG wastewater treatment facility is vital to protect East Greenwich Cove and the
Hunt River aquifer. The aquifer provides half of the drinking water used by EG residents. - Over the past 10 years, the sewer system was expanded to serve 100% of our population
east of Route 2. - There are no current plans for extending the collection system west of Rt 2. Properties
west of Rt 2 uses onsite treatment systems such as leach fields. - The sewer collection system is about 50 miles of pipes.
- The Wastewater Treatment Facility was originally constructed in 1928, with significant
updates in 1956, 1972, 1989, 2004, and most recently in 2006 for denitrification. - In November 2019 the town approved $4.5 million for further facility upgrades.
- The town is updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan to address the impacts of climate
change on our treatment plant from flooding, storm surge, coastal erosion, and sea-level
rise.
